Cherokee Women Have Always Led the Way

Cherokee Women have always held key leadership roles and have been strong leaders in our communities for thousands of years. Women were the heads of their families. Our clans are given to us by our mothers. In Cherokee culture, grandmothers and mothers made the big decisions for families and the whole Tribe.

Today, we need that same wisdom and strength in our government. Currently, 14 men represent our entire Tribe, with no mothers or grandmothers in key leadership roles. When you support women leaders, it’s not to be unfair to men. When you support women leaders, you follow our Cherokee culture and traditions. This is how Cherokee people have always lived. Women leading is not new for us - it's who we are.
